“Traditionally the denturist sees the patient and after much frustration in treating the patient with Conventional dentures advises the patient to seek treatment for implants from a dentist.
Should the patient accept the advice of the denturist and seek a consultation with the dentist, the dentist then must quickly establish a rapport of trust with the patient and try to sell the patient on the treatment. The dentist establishes the fee and collects the major portion of the money. Many times the dentist does not refer the patient back to the denturist. If the patient does return, the denturist only gets a fee for the denture fabrication.
The denturist takes a risk of losing the patient and only earning a small fee for the
additional work of attaching the denture to the implants. The denturist is now also in a position that he/she must maintain the attachments and may not receive an additional fee for this treatment. Many times when the denturist refers outside their practice, the patient is not referred back or the treatment plan is changed without consultation with the denturist. This is not acceptable to the denturist.
If we change the strategy and have the denturist sell the patient, collect the total fee and subcontract the surgery to a dentist for a fee, the denturist retains control of their patient and control of the treatment plan. They also receive a larger share of any profit.
The Denturist knows the patient better and is in a better position to convince the patient of the merits of implants. A larger proportion of the fee now goes to the denturist for the additional responsibility. The confidence and stature of the Denturist is increased and the patient may be quoted a reduced fee than they would receive from a dentist. The dentist also receives payment for services he would not have received otherwise. This is a “win-win-win” situation for the “denturist-patient-dentist”.
